Spring Thaw

Finally, it’s spring! Theoretically. This week we had a snowstorm, icy roads and record low overnight temps. It’s supposed to nudge into the 60s this weekend, so spring’s at least trying to get here.

The Susquehanna River’s not the only thing that’s finally thawing out. The writer’s block that’s been with me for most of last year is breaking up at last. Remember those three-four stories I was bouncing around between? One of them finally stuck. I’ve been working on it steadily and inspiration is starting to pick up speed. If I’m not careful, I could have it done soon. Then it’s rewrite, polish and bam! I’ll have a finished manuscript to send out. The last time that happened was about a year ago. For those of you wanting a writing career, here’s a hint: you have to write, and you have send stuff out. Good stuff. Repeatedly, and as often as possible. Sorry, but that’s the only way to do it.

I’m not going to say which story it is because I don’t want to jinx it. Bits of it have appeared here and on my other blog as free reads. Have fun guessing.

What did I learn about beating writer’s block? Sadly, not much of anything. I never stopped writing entirely. I continued to write something every day, even if it was only a paragraph. I just didn’t finish anything. None of the ideas logjammed in my head grabbed hold and demanded to be written. I even entered a writing contest with deadlines in the hopes that would force me to finish something. That didn’t work either. Luckily I didn’t get anywhere in the contest, so it didn’t matter anyway. Here’s something I did learn: when you force yourself to write a book, that book will end up crap. That manuscript, or as much as I completed of it, has joined my other abandoned books and false starts in the closet, where it will sit until inspiration rears its head again.

Because that’s the beauty of writing. Some of these things never actually die. They just go dormant, like those flower bulbs you planted last fall. (We’re swinging back into the spring analogy here. Bear with me.) Then, when it warms up and the ground thaws out, they break through the soil, reach for the sun and yell, “Write me!” That was the case with my current WIP. It started out shaky, went cold for a while, then had an unexpected resurgence. Now it looks like I could actually finish it. Take that, writer’s block!

Sure, you’re bound to reap a weed or two, but some of these stories will come back to life and bloom into something beautiful. It all depends on the plant food, not to mention fertilizer. Yes, folks, sometimes writing requires mounds and mounds of shit.

Sorry. It’s been a brutal winter.

What I meant to say is, don’t give up. Not on writing, and not on what you write. Stories hit plot snags or go cold. Sometimes they die. Sometimes the wall slams down. If you’re serious about being a writer, you just have to plow on through. Eventually the temperatures rise, the sun climbs higher in the sky and the ice on the river breaks up. Remember, spring also brings floods. Hope your typing fingers can keep up.

Here’s a legitimate tip, a little game I’ve been playing to keep me going and help shake the ideas loose. I keep track of my daily page count on a calendar, hung up on the wall where I can see it. Every day I try to match or surpass the page count from the previous week. The challenge keeps me working, and guarantees I’ll write something on any given day. Even a single paragraph is progress.

Granted, sometimes it’s hard to even match when I’m writing longhand. Once I start typing up the handwritten pages, watch those page counts soar!

Now all I need to deal with are my procrastination issues. For instance, I just wrote this blog instead of working on the story. Okay, I’m done with this excuse. Onward and upward!

Also, at this time, Mother Earth needs our ability to love her, to care for her. As well, we need to love each other, in the broadest sense. For, loving our neighbor is and will be the salvation of a free people.

On the AWAKENING front, The Time of the Great Reckoning is Here. For, the cosmic clock demands every karmic debt must be paid in full. In that respect, the past now collides with the future.

Watch this 'reckoning' firestorm envelop society. Bash-boom-bang! This means whatever you owe as an individual, or however you have trespassed against another, and never made amends -- now comes due.

HOWEVER, the greatest karmic debt is owed by the Viper elite enemies of humanity. For, their time to pay the Divine Piper is here.

Whatever diabolical moves these black-hearted criminals make on the planetary chessboard  now backfires, backlashes, boomerangs -- boom, boom, boom. In some form, love is likely to be front and center in your life as well. Keep giving your love to those who truly deserve it, and deny acceptance to any who do not have your best interests at heart. This is vitally important.

Not So Mighty Now, Are You?

I freely admit it: I’m paranoid. I look for bad things to happen. That way, when they do I’m not surprised. Not always prepared, but at least not surprised.

Recently my paranoid mind hit on a thought that sparked a fresh round of fear, because it would affect the way I write. Normally I’m in favor of any excuse to put off sweating blood and words onto the page, but this one troubles me.

Some time ago I became aware that some schools no longer teach handwriting. You know, cursive. The one you sign your name with. God only knows how future generations will sign contracts and personal checks, or read old letters and diaries left behind by their families. Since most generations cling to the notion that all important history started with them, I suppose this won’t be much of a loss.

(Quick derail: does anyone know if shorthand has also become extinct? Does anyone even know what shorthand is? With all the recording devices out there, I guess there’s no reason for secretaries to take dictation any more. Or type, if everybody has their own personal computer or voice-recognition software. Not that this has eliminated paper. Remember how computers were supposed to make us a paperless society? Yeah, right.)

Here’s my concern: if everybody’s typing and nobody does handwriting any more, what does that say about the survival of that ubiquitous bit of office supply, the pen?

Personally, I love pens. I keep at least half a dozen in my purse at all times. Most of them even work. I have a small pocket-sized notebook to go with them. You never know when an idea or a scene will hit while you’re out on the road. It also comes in handy if you’re in an accident and need to jot down the other driver’s info. If your car breaks down and you don’t have a cell phone, you can write SOS on a piece of paper and make a paper airplane, but that doesn’t work very well.

Pens play an important role in my writing system. I can write on a computer if the mood strikes me, but I prefer creating my first drafts in longhand. Maybe it’s because my computer crashed one time and I lost everything on the hard drive. Paranoid, remember? Once you’ve committed that ink to paper, you’ve got yourself a copy that won’t crash. I type a lot faster than I handwrite, for sure, but if I’m going to sit there staring at the page/screen for long periods wondering what comes next, it really doesn’t make a difference what writing method I use. Besides, if I get stuck or bored I can doodle cartoons in the margins. You can’t do that on a computer. It smears up the screen something fierce.

Anyway, there’s something immensely satisfying about holding a pen in your hand, setting its point on a piece of paper and watching the magic physically flow from your brain to your hand to the page. When I really get going I can write longhand almost as fast as I type. Reading that frenzied scrawl three days later does pose a problem, I’ll admit, but it also forces me to slow down and really consider my word choices. This is only the first draft, after all. Messy pages are par for the course.

I do type. My second draft consists of typing the handwritten manuscript onto a computer—either my Paleolithic original system, the one with the printer (so paranoid me will still have a hard copy), or directly onto the laptop. If I need to add a scene or a chapter, I draft it in pen. Someday when I’m famous and kids are forced to study my work in Lit class, colleges will fight over my stacks of handwritten manuscripts, with all their scribbles and cross-outs and doodles in the margins and snide notes to myself.

Which nobody will be able to read because cursive will have become a lost art in the meantime and anything that isn’t block printing might as well be cuneiform. At least older folks who’ve lost their jobs will be able to find work as handwriting translators. (Just ignore that drawing of the saber-tooth tiger in the corner. It doesn’t represent anything, other than I was hung up on a plot point at the time.)

It might be a good idea for me to start hoarding pens, just in case. I remember when vinyl records disappeared practically overnight. I don’t want to be caught flatfooted again. Ditto spiral notebooks, just in case that prediction of a paperless workplace actually comes true. In a pinch I can use crayons. Crayons are the only things that’ll quiet down unruly preschoolers. They’ll never go out of style.

The alternative is to work harder and write my books faster, so I’ll have a fat pile of handwritten drafts finished when pens finally give up the ghost, or the ink or whatever. Then I can sit back and type all day, and use my crayons to draw colorful doodles all over my computer screen. I always think better with some form of writing utensil in my hand. No way I’m giving that up.

However, those who exist in the *ostrich head in the sand, tail a target* realm of denial will either retreat deeper into this psy-op fantasy, this weaponized culture against humanity -- and/or viciously attack truth tellers.

Of course, this 'confrontation' will get ugly fast in some areas of the country -- of the world.

On the magickal, mystical front, this week the 'Mages of Ages Lost' spin like the most crazed dervishes clearing away layer upon layer of poisonous frequencies. For, at this time the Viper-black magicians loose every vile sorcery trick against humankind.

Yet, so rises the ancient knowledge of the Force, and the energetic forces on Earth. Now, more and more of us will 'naturally' know to use these energies for GOOD, and for survival. To create the future anew.

On the personal front, this week could be filled with highs and lows as far as achievement. Reach one peak, then fall into the valley. However, stay on the journey and look for a better pathway to your goals. It's all about figuring out how to overcome the obstacles, and trusting yourself.

Also, keep an eagle eye on your financial situation. It could mean saving yourself serious problems down the road.

On the paranormal front, an exciting week ahead for those who study paranormal-supernatural phenomena and subjects. This is partly because the dam is breaking as far as our ages-ago magickal *past* is concerned.

Knowledge about the true nature of supernatural reality has been denied to most of humanity. Thus, the coming revelations will lead to more fantastical discoveries, and far more understanding about the high-strangeness reality enveloping our planet -- or, dimensions that have always been part of this planetary matrix.

One Thing Leads to Another

The saga continues. After visiting another bookstore and still not finding a copy of It, I decided to go to the source, and checked both Amazon and the Penguin site (the book’s current publisher). Copies are available. How recent are they? Well, a 25th anniversary edition came out in 2012, but I’m not paying $400 just to see if a politically-incorrect term is still included in the text. I couldn’t determine if the paperbacks for sale on the sites were old copies or recent reissues. Since I found the word in question in a brand-new copy of a different Stevie book, I’m going to go ahead and assume any future versions of It will include all the words Stevie originally wrote, including the offensive ones. Freedom of speech and all that.

However, this question led me into another one. Suppose Stevie was just starting out, and submitted his lengthy, bad-word-laden manuscript to today’s publishers in today’s PC climate. Would they still publish the book as is, or would they demand that one racially-charged word be removed?

(I’m sure the other dirty words, like fuck and cunt and shit, would be okay. See, I just used them myself and nothing bad happened. So far.)

I can’t answer this question. The only person who could with any authority would be an acquisitions editor, and I doubt if they’re spending their rare free time reading my blog. Unless and until somebody comes forward with this inside information, all I can offer are guesses and theories.

My theory is: it depends.

Publishers have their own set of do’s and don’ts, which vary from company to company. Almost all romance publishers won’t accept incest, rape and underage sex. Mainstream has no problem with any of that. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo contains things that have gotten other books taken down from Amazon. Ditto Game of Thrones, which is shelved under Fantasy. I know of at least one instance where a writer was told to make a gay character straight if she wanted the sale. She chose to self-publish. I’m sure she could have found a more accommodating publisher if she’d kept looking. Plenty of agents and editors have “more LGBT characters” on their wish lists. You just have to connect with the right one.

I myself hit an odd taboo back in the ‘80s, when I was trying to market a science fiction novel. It kept getting rejected. Why? Well, because it sucked. Looking back on it now, I get down on my knees and thank all the gods it didn’t sell, it was so embarrassingly bad. I don’t even know if I could rework it today to make it any better.

So what was the reason given for all the rejections? It could have been any number of things, from unworkable concept to unbelievable/underdeveloped characters to dirty language on down, but here’s what the editors said: they didn’t like the book because—brace yourself—one of the characters smoked. Yeah. That was my biggest mistake. This was the 1980s and the beginning of the anti-smoking campaign. The editors were trying to quit, and having a character light up hit them in a sore spot. Or so I was told. None of them said they’d buy the book if I had the guy drink instead. I suspect it was just a handy excuse to reject an unsalable manuscript, but who can say for sure?

I have a book on the market now. This book may also suck. Or the sticking point could be my biracial (Japanese/Latino) main character. I’ve only gotten form rejections so far. Until somebody tells me flat out that’s a no-no, I can only keep guessing. I’ll keep you posted.

Given what facts I’ve uncovered so far, I’ve come to this conclusion: if your story absolutely has to include possibly-offensive material, don’t write genre. Aim for mainstream. Seriously. Genre publishers tend to be smaller and can’t afford to lose any sales. The big publishers may put out genre lines, but their cash cow is general fiction, and they’re big enough to get away with things smaller or self-pubbers can’t.

This is why I’m assuming It still contains objectionable terms, even though times have changed. Next time you’re in a bookstore, look where Mr. King's books are shelved. He was never stuck in the F/SF section with the other horror books. He started out on the Fiction shelves, with the “real” novels. For a long time there was a separate Horror section, but only because Stevie and the copycats who followed him made it popular. Horror as a separate genre didn’t exist until Stevie started selling megacopies. Last week when I was in Barnes and Noble, I noticed there’s no longer a Horror section. Horror is back in F/SF, and to a lesser extent in Young Adult. Stevie’s back on the Fiction shelves, next to Dean Koontz and whoever else outsold the competition, and his books are just the way he wrote them back in simpler times. The power of the publisher.

Which leads into yet another question. Suppose you wrote a book and sent it off to a publisher. Suppose they offered you a ton of money for it—but only if you made certain changes, like making a gay character straight or a person of color white or removing a certain word. Suppose making these changes would damage the integrity of your novel. Would you still do it?

This question’s gotten easier to answer. Thanks to self-publishing, writers don’t have to bow to the will of the Big New York 5 anymore. We can write our books the way they need to be written and still get them into readers’ hands. We might get trashed on review sites, but that happens no matter who the publisher is. I take no responsibility for any lawsuits filed because of alleged hateful language.

And no, I wouldn’t make my biracial hero white in order to make a sale. He has to be the way he is, for reasons to be explained in a possible sequel. Somehow I get the feeling the evil Catholic priest will make it past editors unchallenged. Editorial fiat is often stranger than fiction.
