Never had Zance felt this unbearably empty, this fucking surreal. Even though, he pumped his legs harder, faster, it seemed as though an eternity passed before he fell to his knees beside Sherilyn, sniffing for her life essence. 

Seconds later, Dontoya dropped to his knees on the other side of her. "She's bleeding internally. Bad. I smell it." 

"We only got one way to save her." 

"Do it fast."

Here's a snippet from my New Year's Eve erotic shapeshifter menage, starring Sherilyn and her two heroes, Zance and Dontoya. However, this scene stars Dante. He's an alpha wolf secondary character, who is the owner of the Interspecies Pleasure Club. Within the club he's built the Midnight Stardust Supperclub, and the grand opening is on New Year's Eve. To make certain there are enough dance partners for the ladies, Dante has invited his VAMPIRE friends.

Seven paragraphs from HER MIDNIGHT STARDUST COWBOYS ~ 

He'd had a helluva of a time choosing possible scents to infuse the air with, given the diversity of patrons. Eventually, Dante figured it'd be best to keep the air purified. The ladies would be wearing various fragrances and perfumes--the men colognes. 

Splendid in its own right, Dante had provided a large smoking room, separate from the rest of supperclub. Although, most shapeshifters weren't habitual smokers, their noses being too sensitive. 

Dante resumed his stride, a smile curving his mouth. With the reservations pouring in, he just might break even. 

In the long scheme of things, that was the least of his concerns. The plan was to get the supperclub off on the right paw, as a haven for those who enjoyed a sophisticated night out. 

To encourage patrons, he'd already hired several dance instructors for private or group lessons in ballroom dancing. Most importantly, Dante had made certain there'd be gallant and gentlemanly dance partners at the grand opening, for all the ladies who were unescorted. 

His Vampire friends, a special breed unlike Hollywood's version of the blood drinkers, had traveled from all over the world, especially willing to meet and dance with any available woman. 


Dante grinned, recalling their palpable excitement as he'd told them about the Midnight Stardust Supperclub. Of course, he'd promised them real blood wine, always a particularly good inducement, given their refined palates. As well, staying at the Pleasure Club, and enjoying the carnal amenities, had worked its magic.

Dontoya watched Sherilyn press her cheek against the mare's cheek, and hug her neck. The poignancy of the scene arrowed deep inside his heart. 

Unable to look away, and give her privacy, Dontoya stood rooted to the ground. Caught in a timeless moment--only aware he gripped the blanket--he soaked in the love pouring out of his mate. 

"She has a fierce heart for love and for what's right." Zance quietly spoke beside him. 

"She does, pardner." 

At that instant, Sherilyn felt his gaze, evident by the way she lifted her head and sought him out. Sparks flashed between them, those vibrations that said more than words ever could. 

The knowing, the feeling of love, but beyond that, what Dontoya called 'trusted love'. Whether she knew it consciously or not, Sherilyn trusted him and Zance at a deep level now. 

Honor burned through Dontoya like the sacred fire built for a shamanic ceremony. Honor that his woman trusted him.

Chapter Fifty-six:
Zance grinned for all he was worth... 

Zance grinned for all he was worth at his mate, then gave Dontoya a quick *I beat you* wink as he snaked his arm around Sherilyn's waist. He pulled her flush against him, and planted a big long kiss on her mouth.

Her eager lips answered his with a passion that dang near deep-fried his toes. 'Course, his cock stood in a near salute--only inhibited by the supernatural hell they'd been through. Also, he heard the running footsteps of the ranch's security team.

Breaking their kiss, Zance whirled Sherilyn into Dontoya's embrace. "I'll go round up a couple of saddle blankets. So we'll be decent enough, pardner."

"Yeah," was all Zance heard before Dontoya pounced on their mate's lips, and did some of his own fierce kissing on her mouth.

Jogging toward the tack room, Zance mentally howled with gratitude to the Wolf Great Spirit. Too many times to count, he and Donny-cat had been between a rock, the size of a mountain, and a hard place, shaped like the devil himself.

Sure as the next sunrise, they'd prevailed somehow, even if it was just escapin' with their tails. Yep, thanks to the beings and spirits on the good side who often gave a helpin' paw.

This time, when protecting his Sherilyn, he'd felt fear unleash itself inside him. Although, the ferociousness of his wolf nature damn well made up for it, coursing through his blood like an unstoppable firestorm.

Chapter Fifty-two:
As wolf, Zance stalked through...

As wolf, Zance stalked through the night shadows, his senses on full alert. His footfalls barely disturbed the packed snow as he followed the line of trucks.

There were enough horse trailers to hold every one of Sherilyn's horses.

His nose told him twelve hired varmints, loaded for bear, accompanied the Templetons, along with four horse wranglers. Zance telepathed the information to Dontoya, who waited to pounce as cougar at the stable's main entrance.

All their well laid plans had come tumbling down like a house of cards the instant Sherilyn's vision knocked her to the floor--shortly after their late dinner.

She'd watched the enormous rift form before her mind's eye, a tunnel through time and space, leading directly to the ranch, and targeting the stable.

A split second later, the Pruez witch cast her black spell slamming him and Dontoya against the back of the couch. The dark energies twined around them like hungry anacondas, reminding Zance of the time he'd battled one of the colossal reptiles to save Donny-cat.

On the heels of her evil attack, Othalya activated the dimensional vortex. Only their combined supernatural force freed him and Dontoya from the serpentine trap.

Behind her, Sherilyn heard Toro's steady lope. All too soon, the path curved sharply. Always sure-footed, her stallion slowed, measuring his steps.

After settling back in the minimal saddle, Sherilyn stoked Cloud's neck to let him know she appreciated his trail smarts. The stallion pranced, and flashed his cream-colored tail several times.

Cloud eased into a fast rolling walk, and Sherilyn shot a sassy grin at Dontoya. "Couldn't resist."

On the heels of her exuberance--here it came--her crushed spirit surfaced nastily. Dontoya's answering grin rescued her.

Witnessing the raw passion in his eyes, Sherilyn tamped down her painful emotions, and blew him a kiss.

"Personal and private courtesan." Dontoya's voice sounded like he growling chewed his words. "I'm countin' on it, darlin'."

Me, too, wanted to come out of her mouth. Instead, her cheeks blazed fiery hot, and Sherilyn found herself held hostage by shyness.

"Go ahead," Sherilyn prompted at Zance's hesitation.

"The Templeton varmints are bein' manipulated. Or you could say, they're being helped out by the sorceress's black arts. It's all comin' together kinda complicated like. And soon."

Dontoya watched his mate's expression change from astonishment to fear. Then, she become thoughtful. "From the looks on your faces, you two have a plan like Zance said earlier."

"Told her we'd talk about it later this evening." Zance scooted his chair back, moving to Sherilyn. "Gotta go take care of things. Give me a kiss, sweet thing."

Zance planted a kiss on Sherilyn's mouth for several moments.

Damn if Zance didn't sound like an old-fashioned western hero. Sherilyn would have melted toward him like an eyelash-batting, gooey heroine if the Templetons weren't about to rear their effing heads.

"True. I know." She sighed and felt her shoulders slump. "The Templetons are criminals down to their core. And no law enforcement agency will ever stop them. Too much bribe money, and lawyers that are slicker than a corral full of greased pigs."

"Yep, that's why the Good Lord made those of us who will stop them."

"I never thought of it like that. It does make sense, though." Sherilyn twisted inside with conflicting emotions. "It's just that...that I was raised to be ever so civilized." She hauled in a breath. "Too damn civilized, and look where it's gotten me."

"In my arms, sweetheart. And in my bed." Zance winked outrageously, squeezing her hand again.

Sherilyn couldn't help but answer him with a sassy smile, and a flirtatious toss of her hair. Still, foreboding clung to her.

 "Now there's a plan. Why don't we get out of these good duds? Then, I'll put on another pot of joe, and we'll come up with a killer plan." Zance smirked in his wolfish way.

"Killer plan, yeah." Dontoya widened his lips in a predator's smile. "Nothing like takin' down the bad guys."

"Nothin'," Zance agreed. He took hold of Dontoya's empty glass, and headed for the kitchen.

Grabbing his jacket from the couch where he'd tossed it, Dontoya strode toward his bedroom. To ease his sudden concern over Sherilyn, he sent his awareness to her, connecting through the Ring of Union.

She slept soundly enough, but was agitated at an intuitive level. Dontoya knew why. In her dream state Sherilyn observed Othalya's sorcery construct. He sensed her move into the interior.

Startled, Dontoya rushed to his room. A lead ball settled in the pit of his stomach as he launched toward the nearest chair, and seated himself.

Shutting his eyes, he soared after his mate, dream walking with her.

Silence weighed heavily between them, and Dontoya rubbed his chin, deep in thought. There had to be an answer--whether from the ancient manuscripts of his people, the knowledge of other shamans, or by tuning into his inner Spirit.

The troubling question, would he find the answer in time?

"Any good news?" Zance asked, his tone more subdued than Dontoya had heard for over a decade.

"Yeah, pard. Even if Othalya activates that construct from hell's ass, as long as we're with Sherilyn, she can't be taken. The vortex isn't strong enough to penetrate our natural protective force around our her as our mate."

"Taken," Zance repeated, his voice mechanical sounding. "Where?"

"Only the One Spirit knows. Trapped in another dimension, another time or timeline. Transported into slavery of some kind."

Zance eyed him like a hunting wolf, wanting answers. "What about Sherilyn's emerging powers?"
